The CNC Model E

This model was first recorded in the company’s records dating back to 1916. It was furnished with an 8” work table. In 1917, they produced a 12” machine and identified the two models as A-8 and A-12. In 1918 they added a 16” machine and referred to this as A-16. They continued with this same basic design with modifications until 1935. In 1936, extensive changes were made in the Arter machines. The Model A machines were split into two styles. The Model A-1 machines were built in 8” and 12” sizes using the old sleeve bearings, etc. in the wheel and chuck spindles. An improved Model A machine, designated as Model A-3, was built in 12” and 16” sizes. This machine had ball bearings in the work spindle and the wheel spindle used a plain bearing on the wheel end and a ball bearing on the sheave end. It also had a two-stage disk type clutch and brake which was a substantial improvement. All machines of Model A-1 and A-3 series, whether 8”’, 12” or 16” chuck sizes, have a wheelhead driven by a flat belt. The later Model A’s have a motor mounted on the wheelhead with a Reeves drive to chuck spindle.

Model A

The original Arter surface grinder

This model was Arter’s first attempt at hydraulic powered machines. The Model B was built in 20”, 24”, 30” and 40” sizes with a hydraulic wheelhead and hydraulic fluid motor to drive the rotating chuck. Manufacturing of this model began in 1936 but has been obsoleted. There are still several models around in working order and most spare parts are available if they can be identified.

Model B

The first hydraulic Arter grinder

This model was a smaller version of the Model B hydraulic machine and came in 8”, 12” and 16” sizes. Model C grinders differed principally from the other models in that a motor was built directly into the wheel head for driving the wheel spindle. It was first introduced in 1936. The Model C machine was not a popular model and was obsoleted in 1954.

This model was actually a redesigned Model C and was built in 12” and 16” sizes. It was introduced in the 1939 and not really pushed until after World War II. This model had improvements designed to obtain a high degree of accuracy and fine finish. On these models the spindle traveled, and the table remained stationary. This model was built by Arter Grinding Machine Company, Sundstrand and Centro-Metalcut, Inc. Although the Model D is obsolete, many are still in operation today. They are serviceable and most spare parts are available for this model if they can be identified.

Model D

This model was originally designed by Arter Grinding Machine Company in the late 1940’s and is still sold today. It is a saddle-type machine with the wheelhead mounted on a vertical side. This design produces superior flatness and parallelism. The biggest change from the Model D to Model E was that the spindle remains stationary and the table travels. This change helped to greatly reduce vibration. The first models made by Arter Grinding Machine Company were 12” and 16”. The Model E has gone through the most revisions and updates of all the models. Sundstrand and Centro-Metalcut, Inc. additionally built the hydraulic machines and added improvements. During Tri-CAM, Inc. ownership of the product line, they removed the hydraulics from this model and introduced servo drives making this model a CNC machine. Unfortunately, the hydraulic Model E is no longer manufactured but we offer rebuild/repair services and replacement parts for all hydraulic Model E grinders.

Hydraulic Model E

This model was introduced in the late 1950’s by Arter Grinding Machine Company just before they sold out to Sundstrand. This model was available only in 12” and had lower horsepower and the table was able to slide due to the rack and pinion from a reversing mechanism. It is assumed that these features were introduced for economic purposes. It was a mechanically operated machine as contrasted with the Model E which is hydraulically operated. This model was obsoleted soon after its introduction.

Model F

Only available in 12” and had lower horsepower and the table was able to slide due to the rack and pinion from a reversing mechanism.

This model was built to replace the Model B and first introduced in 1965. The Model H was designed by Sundstrand in 16”, 20”, 24”, 30” and 40” sizes. All sizes except the 40” were equipped with a chuck that could be tilted and locked to grind work up to 10⁰ convex, or 10⁰ concave. It was designed for heavy stock removal and superior finish, flatness, and parallelism. The entire machine chassis was designed for maximum strength and rigidity. Sundstrand and Centro-Metalcut, Inc. successfully built many Model H grinders however this model was obsoleted during the Tri-CAM, Inc. ownership. There are many still in use today because of their durability, ease of use with only moderate grinding skills required for operators.
